September has so far been and will continue to be a big month in Ardent news.
First and foremost, the Big Star Boxed Set (Keep an Eye on the Sky) was released on September 15, to rave reviews. Rolling Stone (4 1/2 out of 5 stars), Spin Magazine (10 out of 10), Entertainment Weekly (A), MOJO (5 out of 5), Uncut (4 out of 5), Q (4 out of 5) and Pitchfork (9.3 out of 1o, also named Best New Music) all spoke about it in the most positive light.
Then, of course, there is the reissue of Chris Bell’s I Am The Cosmos, due out on the 29th of September. The two-disc set will include 13 never-before-released tracks from Bell’s all too short recording career. Collectors, rejoice – The first 1,000 units shipped from Rhino Handmade’s Web site will include a recreation of the I Am The Cosmos/You and Your Sister 7″.
Last but not least, we are pleased to announce the release of Super 400‘s Sweet Fist, which was tracked, mixed, and mastered all here at Ardent Studios and L. Nix mastering. The cover is pictured above. The artwork on the cover was done by none other than Klaus Voormann (of The Beatles’ Revolver cover fame). Klauss came here in late 2008 to finish up work on his album A Sideman’s Journey with friend and Ardent regular Don Nix. Jason Latshaw, who engineered on both the Voormann project and the Super 400 project, facilitated the meeting of minds that eventually produced the cover. Sweet Fist was also released on September 15 and is currently available on Amazon.com.

On Sept. 29 at 7 pm (doors open at 6 pm) at Studio On The Square, The Memphis Chapter of The Recording Academy and the Producers & Engineers Wing will present Recording The Beatles, a multi-media event featuring Kevin Ryan and Brian Kehew, authors of the book Recording The Beatles: The Studio Equipment and Techniques Used To Record Their Classic Albums. It addresses the technical side of The Beatles sessions and was written with the assistance of many of the group’s former engineers and technicians. The authors spent over a decade researching the subject matter and offer up their findings in exhaustive detail. The 540-page hardcover book, which costs over $100, has been highly praised not only for its massive scope, but also for its presentation.
