Booker T. Jones, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame keyboardist for Booker T & the MGs who played on dozens of R&B classics for Stax Records, will release his first solo album in two decades on April 21. Potato Hole, recorded for Anti-Records in Athens, Ga., and San Francisco, features the Drive-By Truckers.

“Their three-guitar approach appealed to me,” he says. Make that five, on occasion: Jones added guitar parts on some tracks, and Neil Young played throughout. “He adds that special thing that only he can do.”

Potato Hole includes covers of Tom Waits‘ Get Behind the Mule, the Truckers’ Space City and Outkast’s Hey Ya. “We did a psychedelic thing with it at the end,” Jones says of Hey Ya. “We recorded the song, then made a loop and recorded some other stuff. Sometimes you’ll hear the organ part, then you’ll hear it again in the background.”

Ardent Music‘s newest band, Star & Micey, are scheduled to play the Hi Tone Cafe on Monday, January 19th. Come on out and see a GREAT show with Nick Redmond and Grace Askew opening

A word on Star & Micey:

It was a dark night, like many before it in Memphis, Tennessee. Joshua Andrew Cosby walked home from rehearsal with his guitar, case-less, slung over his back. A local homeless man flagged him down, not for money but for a story. He explains to Cosby how he had written a song about his ex-wife Micey. There, on that dimly lit street there was an exchange, two men playing each other songs of heartbreak and the ultimate sacrifice. Upon parting ways, this man revealed his name to Cosby. That name became the fixture for one of Memphis’ most inventive bands, Star And Micey. It’s core members listed as three brothers without the same last name, Geoff Smith, Joshua Cosby, and Jerry Meadows. It was merely coincidence that Cosby later met Nick Redmond at a local pub and began a relationship based on music and above all, brotherhood. Read more
