MEMPHIS, TN – Ardent Studios today mourns the passing of Fred Smith, the iconic founder of FedEx and a pivotal co-founder of Ardent Studios. Smith, whose entrepreneurial spirit reshaped global logistics, also played a crucial role in the early days of one of Memphis’s most legendary recording institutions.
Fred Smith’s deep connection to Ardent Studios began in his youth. He and Ardent’s visionary founder, John Fry, were childhood friends and classmates, both graduating from Memphis University School (MUS) in 1962. This shared formative experience laid the groundwork for their collaborative venture into the world of music.
In 1959, while still in high school, Smith, Fry, and their friend John King, driven by a mutual passion for electronics and music, established Ardent Records in Fry’s family garage. This humble beginning marked the genesis of what would evolve into Ardent Studios, a globally recognized recording facility. Smith’s early belief in Fry’s vision and his instrumental support were critical in the studio’s establishment and its subsequent growth.
Fred Smith’s impact on the world of business is immeasurable, transforming how goods and information are transported globally. However, at Ardent Studios, he will always be remembered as a cherished friend, a dedicated co-founder, and a key figure in the studio’s rich history.
Ardent Studios extends its deepest condolences to Fred Smith’s family, friends, and colleagues during this time of profound loss.
